Downtown is where the heart is...and where your dollars should go

Research has shown time and time again that downtowns are truly the heart of a community. Some cities have bustling historic downtowns, while others struggle to fill vacant store fronts. Some cities don’t have downtowns, and some cities create their own downtowns; think Arbor Lakes in Maple Grove, or the Shoppes at West End in St. Louis Park. Big or small, downtowns are the home of both unique ma ‘n pa restaurants, or larger chains. Regardless, downtowns provide a place to gather- a place for the community to come together and make memories.

Downtown Elk River is no different. In addition to a handful of restaurants, a couple of banks, and your staple meat market, bakery and barber, downtown Elk River has River’s Edge Commons Park, a beautiful outdoor park along the Mississippi River, which provides a venue for summer concerts, festivals and even the perfect wedding location.

What makes downtown Elk River powerful is a group of business owners, committed to working together to keep the downtown strong; sharing ideas, planning events and using their own hard earned money and valuable time to plan events throughout the year.

The Downtown Rivers Edge Business Association is a group that was formed nearly 22 years ago by downtown business owners. This is not a city-funded group. This is a group of people that truly care about our community, and continue to provide their time and talent to ensure downtown Elk River thrives. Downtown business owners and City representatives meet on a monthly basis to discuss upcoming events, brainstorm promotional ideas and welcome new businesses into the downtown.

With a nominal annual fee, and hundreds of volunteer hours, this group is responsible for launching and maintaining the downtown website, Facebook and Twitter pages. In addition to cross-promoting each other through promotional materials and event specific coupons and promotions, this group works hard to provide a destination for community members and outsiders throughout the year. Upcoming events include:Trick-or-Treat in downtown Elk River, Pumpkin Roll, Santa in the Park and the annual tree lighting. Check out the downtown Elk River website for dates and times.

Not all communities have business associations, so I urge you to take the time to visit downtown Elk River, and check out the following businesses, all Rivers Edge Business Association Members:
